…And we’re back! 😉

It’s been one of those weeks where we receive a flurry of announcements that keeps us on our toes. And although the general public expects things to simmer down soon in the AI space, it appears that things are just heating up. With OpenAI apparently cooking up something on the back burner, the AI scene is far from fading out.

That being said, OpenAI isn’t the only company at the forefront of AI-related happenings this week. Stack Overflow and YouTube both took a swing of the bat 🏏 this week with some much-awaited announcements.

Enough said; there’s a lot to cover today, so get in here!

In this issue, we’ve got:

A portion of OpenAI’s GPT-5 trademark application

As seen in Twitter reports, OpenAI has filed a patent application for GPT-5 with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Though this application was filed way back in mid-July, the details are just coming to light 🌞.

Right now, OpenAI’s most powerful model—GPT-4—powers some of the biggest apps in the AI space, like ChatGPT. And although many are still waiting for some features—like image uploads—OpenAI appears to be well ahead of the game by protecting the IP of their next model.

From the reports, GPT-5 will focus on some pretty impressive areas, such as the artificial production of human speech and text, NLP, audio-to-text generation, and language translation.

And while there’s been no official word from OpenAI on the development of GTP-5, this move appears to be a step 🪜 in the right direction.

Last week, Stack Overflow was all over the headlines due to its “possibly AI-induced” drop in web traffic—about 50%, to be precise. Now, this week, the programmer’s haven is back in the headlines once more, for AI-centric reasons.

Yes, the much-awaited announcement is here! With a recent release 📰 detailing some impressive generative AI-centric service offerings, Stack Overflow has officially joined the AI race. What’s more, these service offerings cut across both the public site as well as the company’s enterprise solution: Stack Overflow for Teams.

Under the umbrella ☔ term OverflowAI, the company hopes to usher in a new wave of AI-centric service offerings as well as integrations on popular platforms like Slack and Visual Studio Code.

To sum things up, here’s what the company’s CEO, Prashanth Chandrasekar, had to say:

“One of the first things that we wanted to focus on is search, because finding information, getting the right answer at the right time, and really trusting the answers is really important. What we are doing is giving the ability for users to ask conversational questions through OverflowAI, and the generative answers are going to come straight from the 58 million questions and answers from public Stack Overflow, with citations to the very specific sources.”.

Well, it’s about time⌛! With the slew of third-party YouTube video summarizers we’ve seen in recent weeks, everyone has been wondering when YouTube will release its official AI-powered video summary generator.

And with the most recent announcements we’ve seen, it appears that the wait is over. As seen on Google’s support page, YouTube has begun experimenting with AI auto-generated video summaries. This helps you quickly decide if a video is the right fit for you or not. At the moment, this feature can be seen in action 🤺 on the watch and search pages—though it’s only available for videos in English.

To close this out, the company had this to say:

“While we hope these summaries are helpful and give you a quick overview of what a video is about, they do not replace video descriptions (which are written by creators!). This experiment is running only with a limited number of videos (en only) and viewers, so if you see the feature, let us know what you think by sending feedback!”
