OpenAI’s first official hardware product is here, and it is probably not what most people expected. The company has launched the Codex Micro, a $230 light-up keyboard designed to help developers manage AI coding agents through Codex.
Created in partnership with specialty keyboard maker Work Louder, the device acts as a physical control centre for developers working with multiple coding agents at once.
In other words, OpenAI wants to bring the AI coding workflow off your screen and onto your desk.
🕹️ A command centre for coding agents
The Codex Micro is designed for developers who use Codex agents to write, review, and execute code with limited human supervision.
Its main features include:
Illuminated “Agent Keys” that display the status of different agents.
Customizable Command Keys for frequently used Codex actions.
A joystick for launching common workflows.
A dial that adjusts how much reasoning time and computing power an agent uses.
Users can customize and control the keyboard through the ChatGPT desktop app. And yes, it also looks like the sort of thing that would immediately become the centerpiece of a very expensive desk setup.
💸 More collector’s item than a mass-market product
OpenAI says the Codex Micro is a limited-run collaboration, which suggests it is not intended to become a mainstream consumer product. At $230, the keyboard is likely aimed at:
Developers already using Codex heavily.
AI enthusiasts who enjoy experimental hardware.
Collectors looking for an early piece of OpenAI-branded technology.
The keyboard gives OpenAI an opportunity to experiment with physical interfaces while promoting Codex and the wider idea of managing teams of AI agents. But the company’s more ambitious hardware plans appear to extend far beyond keyboards.
🔊 OpenAI’s real hardware project sounds much stranger
A separate device reportedly under development is described as a portable, screenless smart speaker powered by ChatGPT.
The product is also said to include mechanical components that can move independently, although it remains unclear how those elements will fit together or what the device will actually do.
The combination of a screenless interface, portability, and moving parts suggests OpenAI is trying to create something that does not fit neatly into existing product categories.
The device is still in development, meaning its design and features could change significantly before release.

Anthropic is no longer just selling models. The company has introduced Ode with Anthropic, a new standalone AI services firm created in partnership with Blackstone and Hellman & Friedman.
Ode is designed to help companies move from experimenting with Claude to actually embedding AI into business operations, the part of enterprise AI that often turns out to be much harder than the demo.
The company combines Anthropic’s frontier models with applied AI engineers, operators, and backing from a heavyweight investor group that includes Goldman Sachs, General Atlantic, Apollo, GIC, and Sequoia Capital.
🛠️ From AI potential to AI execution
The pitch behind Ode is simple: many companies understand that AI matters, but still struggle to make it useful inside real workflows. That gap is where the enterprise AI services market is forming.
Most businesses do not just need access to Claude. They need help figuring out where AI can create measurable impact, how to redesign processes around it, and how to build systems that actually work across teams.
Ode is being positioned as that partner. It will work with leadership teams to define high-priority AI initiatives, then deploy technical teams to build and operationalize them.
That makes it less like a software vendor and more like a frontier AI consultancy with direct access to Anthropic’s ecosystem.
🤝 Why Blackstone and H&F matter
The investor backing is a big part of the story. Blackstone and Hellman & Friedman bring deep enterprise relationships, private equity portfolios, and access to mid-sized and large companies that are under pressure to adopt AI but may not have the internal expertise to do it well.
That gives Ode a potentially powerful distribution channel. Rather than waiting for companies to figure out Claude adoption on their own, Anthropic now has a services partner that can walk into boardrooms, identify use cases, and help build AI systems around business outcomes.
This is especially relevant for sectors like financial services, healthcare, retail, manufacturing, and software, where the opportunity is large but implementation is complex.

Apple has filed a lawsuit accusing OpenAI of stealing confidential information about its unreleased products, engineering processes, and hardware technologies as the AI company builds out its own device business.
The lawsuit alleges that the misconduct was not limited to a few former Apple employees acting independently. According to Apple, it formed part of a wider effort directed by senior OpenAI leaders to extract valuable information from the iPhone maker.
⚖️ Apple says former employees took more than experience
One of the central figures in the complaint is Tang Tan, OpenAI’s Chief Hardware Officer.
Before joining OpenAI, Tan spent 24 years at Apple and most recently served as its Vice President of Product Design for the iPhone and Apple Watch. Apple alleges that Tan and other OpenAI employees:
Used confidential Apple project code names during recruitment.
Asked candidates to bring Apple hardware components, designs, or prototypes to interviews.
Sought information about unreleased products, vendors, and component-selection processes.
Advised departing employees on how to avoid Apple’s security procedures.
The lawsuit also names Chang Liu, a former senior systems electrical engineer who worked at Apple for eight years before joining OpenAI.
Apple claims Liu failed to return his company-issued laptop and used it to download confidential documents containing technical specifications, engineering presentations, proprietary project data, and information about products that had not yet been announced.
📱 OpenAI’s hardware ambitions raise the stakes
The dispute comes as OpenAI prepares to move beyond software and develop its first major consumer hardware product. The company acquired io, the hardware startup founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, for $6.5 billion in 2025. The deal brought Ive’s team into OpenAI to help create a new generation of AI-native devices.
While little has been officially revealed about the product, some industry speculation suggests OpenAI could eventually develop a smartphone-like device built around AI agents rather than traditional apps.
That possibility makes Apple’s allegations particularly significant. OpenAI would not simply be entering another product category; it could be preparing to compete directly with the company whose former employees now lead parts of its hardware operation.
