Hola! Welcome to another issue of the Neural Frontier💡.
First off, no, it’s not clickbait, and yes, OpenAI actually released new models. It’s been a couple of months since the last “new” model from the company. And by the looks of it, they’re not easing off the brakes anytime soon.
In the spirit of new releases, Hume steps up to the podium with its new foundational voice-to-voice model, EVI 2, that can apparently detect human emotions from the tone of your voice.
And wrapping us up, there’s been some breakthrough in AI-powered drug discovery. Chai Discovery just announced a new model rumored to ease the burden of drug discovery.
It’s a lot to take in, we know. So, let’s dissect them piece by piece. See you below 🏄♂️!

OpenAI has introduced a new series of AI models, starting with o1-preview, designed to tackle complex science, coding, and math tasks by reasoning more deeply before responding.
Here’s the scoop:
🧠 Advanced Reasoning Capabilities: The o1-preview models are trained to think through problems thoroughly (yes, this means the models might take some time to respond to prompts), refining their approach and learning from mistakes, much like human reasoning. They outperform earlier models, scoring 83% on the International Mathematics Olympiad qualifying exam compared to GPT-4o's 13%, and excel in physics, chemistry, biology, and coding tasks.
🔍 Early Capabilities and Limitations: Currently, o1-preview models lack features such as web browsing and file uploads, which are available in GPT-4o. However, OpenAI plans to add these capabilities and more in future updates, enhancing the utility of the models for a broader range of tasks.
💡 Safety and Alignment: OpenAI has implemented a new safety training approach, leveraging the reasoning skills of these models to adhere more effectively to safety guidelines. The o1-preview scored 84 on difficult jailbreaking tests, a significant improvement over GPT-4o's score of 22, demonstrating enhanced compliance with safety rules.
⚙️ Model Availability: ChatGPT Plus and Team users can access o1-preview and o1-mini via the ChatGPT dropdown. o1-mini offers a cost-effective solution, particularly for coding, being 80% cheaper and faster than o1-preview. API access is available for developers on tier 5, with further expansions planned for ChatGPT Enterprise, Edu, and Free users.
🎯 Target Users: These models are ideal for professionals in fields requiring advanced reasoning, such as healthcare researchers, physicists, and developers who need to tackle complex workflows. For example, o1 can assist in annotating cell sequencing data, generating complex formulas in quantum physics, and executing multi-step coding tasks.
OpenAI plans continuous updates to the o1 series, including adding features like browsing and file uploads. The goal is to develop models that reason like humans and solve increasingly complex problems across various domains.

EVI 2 is the latest voice-to-voice AI model from Hume, designed to enable remarkably human-like conversations. It offers rapid and fluent responses, understands user tone, and adapts its voice to meet diverse requests, including emulating various personalities, accents, and speaking styles.
Here’s what you need to know:
🎤 Human-Like Conversations: EVI 2 delivers lifelike conversations with subsecond response times and the ability to generate a wide range of tones, from calm discussions to rapping. It's capable of understanding and mirroring user emotions, creating a more immersive interaction compared to traditional voice assistants like Siri or Alexa.
🗣️ Voice Adaptability: EVI 2 can adapt its voice to suit user preferences without cloning voices, reducing associated risks. Users can modulate characteristics such as gender, nasality, and pitch to create unique synthetic voices tailored for specific applications.
🤖 Emotional Intelligence and Personalization: Trained for emotional intelligence, EVI 2 anticipates and adapts to user preferences, maintaining fun and engaging personalities. It aligns its interactions with user happiness and satisfaction, striving to optimize AI for human well-being.
🚀 Getting Started: EVI 2 is available in beta via an app or API. It currently runs on the EVI-2-small model, with plans to improve its reliability, language capabilities, and instruction-following skills. A larger model, EVI-2-large, is in development and will be announced soon.
EVI 2 will continue evolving with more languages, complex instructions, and enhanced adaptability. Future updates will allow users to create custom characters, expanding its application in creating immersive and personalized AI interactions.

Chai Discovery has unveiled Chai-1, a groundbreaking multi-modal AI model designed to predict molecular structures with state-of-the-art accuracy across a variety of biomolecular tasks, significantly advancing the field of drug discovery.
Here’s how:
🧬 Frontier Model for Biomolecular Interactions: Chai-1 excels in predicting the structures of proteins, small molecules, DNA, RNA, covalent modifications, and more. In benchmark tests, Chai-1 achieved a 77% success rate on PoseBusters, outperforming AlphaFold3, and a Cα LDDT of 0.849 on CASP15, besting ESM3-98B. Notably, Chai-1 is capable of folding multimers accurately using single sequences without relying on multiple sequence alignments (MSAs), a significant leap forward compared to AlphaFold-Multimer models.
🧪 Why It Matters: Traditionally, identifying the shapes and interactions of proteins and molecules required time-consuming and costly trial-and-error methods. Chai-1 accelerates and automates this process, offering the potential to identify compounds that could lead to breakthroughs in treating diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s.
🔬 Multi-Modal and Adaptable: Unlike traditional models, Chai-1 can incorporate new data, such as lab-derived restraints, to enhance its predictions. This adaptability allows for improved accuracy in tasks like antibody-antigen structure prediction, making AI-driven antibody engineering more feasible.
🚀 Open Access and Collaboration: Chai-1 is available for free through a web interface, including for commercial use in drug discovery. The model's weights and inference code are also released as a software library for non-commercial use, promoting open collaboration with the research and industrial communities.
Founded by alumni from OpenAI, Meta FAIR, Stripe, and Google X, the Chai Discovery team brings a wealth of experience in AI and drug discovery. With support from investors like Thrive Capital, OpenAI, and Amplify Partners, Chai Discovery aims to transform biology from a science into engineering, with future AI models that predict and reprogram molecular interactions.
