OpenAI has officially launched ChatGPT agent, its most ambitious agentic product yet. Unlike traditional chatbots, ChatGPT agent can actively perform tasks, from web navigation and research to automating complex workflows.

Here's what you need to know:

🤖 What is ChatGPT Agent? ChatGPT agent is an advanced AI assistant capable of carrying out tasks autonomously, including:

• Navigating websites (clicking, scrolling, interacting)

• Running code and commands in a built-in virtual terminal

• Managing calendars and emails through integrated app connectors

• Creating editable presentations and slideshows

• Synthesizing research reports from multiple websites

This unified agent combines strengths from earlier OpenAI tools like Operator (web interaction) and Deep Research (in-depth information synthesis).

🛠️ How It Works

• Users simply activate "agent mode" within the ChatGPT interface.

• Natural-language prompts instruct the agent what task to perform.

• ChatGPT agent intelligently chooses from tools like:

  • Visual and text-based web browsers

  • Terminal for code execution

  • API integrations (Gmail, GitHub, calendar apps, etc.)

• Users maintain control, can interrupt at any time, and receive real-time updates on progress.

🤝 Cognition acquires Windsurf.

Cognition, the startup behind the viral AI coding agent Devin, has announced the acquisition of Windsurf, the rapidly growing AI-powered integrated development environment (IDE). This move marks a significant step in the intensifying race among AI coding startups.

Here’s the lowdown:

🎢 Context of the Acquisition: The acquisition comes just days after Google executed a $2.4 billion reverse-acquihire of Windsurf’s CEO and core leadership team. Google's aggressive move followed closely after a $3 billion offer from OpenAI to acquire Windsurf expired without an agreement.

The aftermath of Google’s move left most of Windsurf’s team behind, allowing Cognition to rapidly step in and acquire the remaining company assets and employees.

📈 Windsurf’s Rapid Growth: Before the acquisition, Windsurf had achieved impressive growth metrics:

• Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR): $82 million (down from a previous peak of $100M after losing access to Claude models).

• Enterprise Growth: Enterprise ARR doubling quarter-over-quarter.

• Daily Active Users: Hundreds of thousands.

🤖 Strategic Significance for Cognition: Cognition, known for its ambitious AI coding agent Devin, which fully automates coding tasks, now gains Windsurf’s powerful AI-driven IDE and a large, dedicated user base. The combination could strengthen Cognition's ability to offer comprehensive AI coding solutions.

• Immediate Benefits: Access is restored to Anthropic’s popular Claude AI models and a comprehensive coding ecosystem, featuring powerful AI-enhanced coding environments (Windsurf) and fully autonomous coding agents (Devin).

• Long-Term Vision: Integration of Windsurf’s technology into Cognition’s Devin product suite and strengthened market position against competitors like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Cursor.

🧑‍💻 Employee & Cultural Integration: All remaining Windsurf employees will financially benefit from this deal. Additionally, vesting cliffs are waived, ensuring employees immediately benefit from their prior work.

Windsurf interim CEO Jeff Wang expressed enthusiasm about joining Cognition, highlighting a shared vision, commitment, and core values.

🤖 Mistral AI releases an open-source audio model!

French AI startup Mistral has unveiled Voxtral, its first open-source AI audio model, designed to offer robust speech transcription and semantic understanding at significantly lower costs compared to existing proprietary solutions.
