In a whirlwind week for Silicon Valleyā€™s most high-profile AI rivalry, Elon Musk offeredā€”and then partially backtrackedā€”on a $97.4 billion bid to acquire OpenAIā€™s nonprofit arm, marking a critical moment in the ongoing feud between Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

Hereā€™s whatā€™s really going on:

šŸ’„ The Bid That Shook Silicon Valley: On February 10, Musk, alongside his AI company xAI and backers including Valor Equity Partners, Ari Emanuel, and 8VC, launched a $97.4 billion bid to purchase OpenAIā€™s nonprofit arm, which controls its capped-profit business. The move was framed as a bid to return OpenAI to its original mission of open-source, safety-focused AI developmentā€”a mission Musk claims has been abandoned.

Musk, who co-founded OpenAI but left in 2018, also used the opportunity to reignite his public feud with Altman, whom he is suing for breach of OpenAIā€™s nonprofit mission. In a bold statement accompanying the bid, Musk said:

ā€œItā€™s time for OpenAI to return to the open-source, safety-focused force for good it once was. We will make sure that happens.ā€

The bid also intensified OpenAIā€™s ongoing for-profit restructuring, a process Altman is navigating amid parallel negotiations with Microsoft and other major stakeholders. Altman swiftly rejected Muskā€™s offer, posting:

āš–ļø Muskā€™s Conditional Withdrawal & Legal Pressure: However, in a court filing on February 12, Muskā€™s legal team made a stunning pivot, stating that Musk would withdraw his takeover bid if OpenAIā€™s board:

  • Halts its conversion to a fully for-profit public benefit corporation (PBC)

  • Commits to preserving the nonprofitā€™s original charitable mission

The filing, submitted to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, asserted that Muskā€™s bid was a ā€œseriousā€ market-value offer and would ensure the nonprofit is compensated at a fair value if it proceeds with restructuring. However, Musk claims his goal is preservation, not acquisition, as described in the filing:

ā€œIf OpenAIā€™s Board is prepared to preserve the charityā€™s mission and take the ā€˜for saleā€™ sign off its assets, Musk will withdraw the bid.ā€

šŸ„Š OpenAIā€™s Fierce Rebuttal: OpenAIā€™s attorneys quickly countered, accusing Musk of a ā€œbad-faith attempt to undermine a competitorā€ and pointing out the contradiction in his legal claims:

  • Musk, through his ongoing lawsuit, claims OpenAIā€™s restructuring would breach its nonprofit mission.

  • Yet, his bid to acquire the nonprofit would, in their view, achieve the very outcome he claims to opposeā€”a transfer of the nonprofitā€™s assets.

Andy Nussbaum, counsel for OpenAIā€™s board, dismissed the bid, stating: ā€œMuskā€™s offer doesnā€™t set a value for OpenAIā€™s nonprofitā€”because the nonprofit isnā€™t for sale.ā€

As of now, no one knows where this is headed. Altman remains defiant, Musk remains litigious, and the AI world watches and waits for the next move.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has provided a detailed roadmap for the highly anticipated GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 models, signalling major upgrades and a simplified user experience.

Hereā€™s what you need to know:

šŸ’” Streamlining OpenAIā€™s Product Lineup: Altman acknowledged user frustration with OpenAI's fragmented offerings, stating: ā€œWe hate the model picker as much as you do and want to return to magic unified intelligence.ā€ To address this, OpenAI aims to unify its model ecosystem, eliminating confusion and providing a seamless experience.

šŸ§  GPT-4.5 - The Last Non-Chain-of-Thought Model: Codenamed "Orion" internally, GPT-4.5 will be OpenAI's final model without chain-of-thought reasoning. The model is expected to feature improved reasoning speed and accuracy but will retain a conventional processing style.

šŸŒŸ GPT-5 - A Unified Intelligence System: GPT-5 will integrate the capabilities of the o-series (including o3) and the GPT-series, unifying OpenAIā€™s model ecosystem. In addition, the system will dynamically choose from OpenAIā€™s tools, adapting between quick responses and deeper reasoning tasks.

Altman also briefly described OpenAIā€™s planned tiered intelligence access system:

  • Free Users: Unlimited access at standard intelligence.

  • Plus Subscribers: Enhanced capabilities with a higher intelligence level.

  • Pro Subscribers: The most advanced intelligence level.

Now, the big question: when can we expect them? Sadly, Altman wasnā€™t particularly clear regarding this, as he provided a rough release timeline of "weeks to months" for both models, keeping the launch window broad but somewhat imminent.

Adobe has officially launched Generate Video, its AI-powered text- and image-to-video tool, in public beta, making it accessible to all users after months of limited early access. This move brings Adobe into direct competition with OpenAIā€™s Sora, Googleā€™s Veo, and ByteDanceā€™s AI video tools.

šŸ”¹ Whatā€™s New in Generate Video? Adobeā€™s AI-powered video generator now features:

āœ… Text-to-Video: Create AI-generated clips from just a text description.
āœ… Image-to-Video: Use an image as a reference alongside text prompts for a more guided generation.
āœ… 1080p Output: Videos are now full HD (24 fps), an upgrade from the previous 720p.
āœ… Refined Controls: Users can adjust styles, camera angles, motion, and shooting distance to fine-tune their results.

šŸŽ„ Limitations? While OpenAIā€™s Sora generates 20-second clips, Adobeā€™s Generate Video caps output at five seconds per clip, taking 90 seconds or more to process. However, a 4K version and a faster, lower-resolution ideation model are in development.

šŸ”„ Firefly Web App Gets a Major Upgrade: Alongside Generate Video, Adobe has revamped the Firefly web app with:

  • Creative Cloud Integration: AI-generated assets can now seamlessly move into Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and Express.

  • Commercial-Safe AI: Unlike some competitors, Firefly is trained on licensed and public domain content, making it safe for commercial use.

šŸ’° Whatā€™s the Cost? Adobe is rolling out two Firefly subscription plans with AI credits:

  • Firefly Standard: For $9.99/month, it offers 2,000 credits and up to 20 five-second video generations.

  • Firefly Pro ā€“ With a price of $29.99/month, this plan comes with 7,000 credits, allowing you to create up to 70 five-second video generations. It also includes unlimited access to Firefly imaging and vector features.
