John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton have been awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics for their groundbreaking contributions to machine learning, which have significantly shaped the foundation of today’s artificial intelligence technologies. 

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences honored the duo for developing methods that revolutionized the way machines learn, benefiting fields ranging from healthcare to scientific discovery.

Here’s the lowdown:

🌍 AI Pioneers: Geoffrey Hinton, often referred to as the "godfather of AI," and John Hopfield, a professor emeritus at Princeton, were recognized for their innovative work that has led to the rapid rise of AI. 

Hinton’s research at the University of Toronto enabled computers to autonomously identify patterns in data, laying the groundwork for advanced AI models like image recognition systems. Meanwhile, Hopfield’s work created an associative memory system that can store and reconstruct images and data patterns, adding new dimensions to how machines process information.

⚡ Harvard students create AI “spy” glasses

Two hackers, AnhPhu Nguyen and Caine Ardayfio, have made headlines by creating what can only be described as real-life "x-ray specs." 

These AI-enhanced glasses can dox people on sight, instantly pulling up personal information like names, addresses, phone numbers, and even family details—all by simply looking at them.

Here’s the scoop: 

🔍 I-XRAY–The AI Glasses: The glasses, dubbed I-XRAY, use a combination of facial recognition, large language models (LLMs), and public databases to extract personal information from someone’s face. 

By leveraging tools like smart glasses equipped with cameras, face search engines, and home address lookup engines, the hackers demonstrate how technology has reached a point where such invasions of privacy are not only possible but frighteningly easy. Their motivation? To raise awareness of the potential dangers posed by AI and smart technology

🛑 Not for Commercial Use: While the hackers have made it clear that their project is purely a research demonstration and not intended for commercial use, their creation reveals the unsettling reality that this level of privacy invasion is now within reach. They’ve refrained from releasing the technical details, emphasizing that the project serves to expose the risks of AI rather than encourage misuse.

💡 How It Works: The specs integrate off-the-shelf smart glasses (Meta Ray-Ban), facial recognition technology, LLMs for data extraction, and services like FastPeopleSearch for personal info lookup. The combination allows for an automatic and comprehensive extraction of data, which was previously not possible with traditional methods. The glasses can even infer relationships between online sources, making the process seamless and shockingly efficient.

The project shines a glaring spotlight on the privacy risks associated with AI-powered devices, large language models, and publicly available data. While the hackers have no plans to commercialize their creation, the implications of this technology are clear: the future of privacy is at risk, and the need for regulation has never been more critical
