Meta has successfully recruited a major AI talent from OpenAI, Trapit Bansal, a highly influential researcher who was central to OpenAI's work on reinforcement learning and AI reasoning.

Here’s everything you need to know about this pivotal move:

🚀 Who is Trapit Bansal? Bansal joined OpenAI in 2022, working closely with co-founder Ilya Sutskever. He played a crucial role in developing OpenAI's early AI reasoning models, notably contributing to OpenAI’s o1 model.

His expertise in AI reasoning and reinforcement learning positions him as a potentially transformative addition to Meta’s ambitious superintelligence lab.

🌟 Why This Hire Matters for Meta: Bansal joins Meta’s new AI superintelligence unit, alongside prominent leaders like former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang, ex-Google DeepMind researcher Jack Rae, and former Sesame AI lead Johan Schalkwyk.

His recruitment signals Meta’s determination to compete directly with industry-leading AI reasoning models like OpenAI’s upcoming o3 and DeepSeek’s R1.

💰 The Talent War Intensifies: CEO Mark Zuckerberg has aggressively expanded Meta’s AI superintelligence team, reportedly offering compensation packages up to $100 million to entice top AI researchers from rivals.

In addition to Bansal, Meta recently hired other former OpenAI researchers, including Lucas Beyer, Alexander Kolesnikov, and Xiaohua Zhai.

🔥 Meta Fires Back at OpenAI’s Claims: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently claimed that Meta’s hefty compensation offers had failed to poach OpenAI’s best talent. In response, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth dismissed Altman’s remarks as “dishonest,” clarifying that these massive offers are reserved for select senior leadership roles:

"Sam is known to exaggerate... because we are succeeding at getting talent from OpenAI. He's not very happy about that."

Meta is looking to build competitive frontier AI reasoning models essential to powering its broader AI ambitions, such as business-focused AI agents under former Salesforce AI head, Clara Shih. Meanwhile, the company’s aggressive hiring spree shows no signs of slowing, with reported ongoing recruitment talks and pipeline hires yet to be announced.
