Hola 😉

It’s raining AI & tech updates, and as expected, we’re here with the scoop (pardon the cliche 😂).

Meta takes the spotlight (or, at least, a large part of it) with its latest announcement. The company is set to release its largest Llama model yet, and we’re here for it!

OpenAI isn’t lacking in R&D either, as the company has partnered with the Los Alamos National Laboratory for bioscience research. To cap it off, the Godmother of AI has successfully created a $1B startup in barely four months.

But how did she do it? Let’s find out!

In a rush? Here's your quick byte:

Meta is gearing up to release its most powerful AI language model yet, Llama 3 400B, by the end of July 2024, and it will remain open source.

Here’s what makes this news exciting:

🚀A New Powerhouse: Meta’s Llama 3 400B, boasting over 400 billion parameters, is set to rival OpenAI's GPT-4. Despite having less than half the parameters, it achieves near-parity on benchmarks, showcasing Meta’s advancements in model architecture and training efficiency.

🌐Open-Source Advantage: True to Meta's tradition, Llama 3 400B will likely be released under an open license, democratizing access to cutting-edge AI. Researchers and developers can use this powerful tool for various applications, from advanced chatbots and virtual assistants to content generation and language translation.

🧠Multimodality and Multilingual Capabilities: The new model promises multimodal interaction (text and images), multilingual conversation, and longer context windows.

💡Efficiency and Cost: Llama 3 400B’s architecture is designed for higher efficiency and lower computational costs. This model could offer substantial savings in energy consumption and operational costs compared to its closed-source counterparts.

🔍 Performance and Potential: Early tests suggest that Llama 3 400B can handle complex tasks efficiently, potentially outperforming many closed-source models. Moreover, its open-source nature allows for continuous refinement and improvement by the developer community.

OpenAI and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) have announced a partnership to explore the safe use of multimodal AI in laboratory settings, aiming to advance bioscientific research.

Here’s the gist of it:

🚀 New Collaboration: OpenAI and LANL are teaming up to evaluate how AI models like GPT-4o can assist scientists with tasks in physical laboratory settings, enhancing productivity and safety.

🔍 Focus Areas: The partnership will assess AI’s role in tasks such as transformation, cell culture, and cell separation. The goal is to understand how multimodal capabilities (vision and voice) can aid in bioscience.

🛡️ Safety First: This initiative aligns with the White House Executive Order on AI safety, emphasizing the importance of evaluating AI capabilities in sensitive fields like bioscience.

🤖 AI in Action: GPT-4o will assist in practical lab tasks, providing real-time feedback and troubleshooting through visual and voice inputs, potentially upskilling both experts and novices.

💡 Innovative Approach: The study will pioneer the use of AI to perform and troubleshoot complex laboratory tasks, setting a new standard for AI applications in scientific research.

To sum it up, we leave you with the words of OpenAI’s CTO, Mira Murati, “This partnership marks a natural progression in our mission, advancing scientific research while understanding and mitigating risks.”

A.I. pioneer Fei-Fei Li has launched World Labs, a startup that has reached a $1 billion valuation in less than four months.

Here’s what you need to know:

🚀 New Venture: In January, Fei-Fei Li took a leave from Stanford and hinted at "something new." That something is World Labs, a groundbreaking startup focused on advancing A.I. beyond mere perception. With a mission to create A.I. that not only sees and talks but also acts, World Labs has quickly attracted attention and substantial investment.

💰 Impressive Funding: Backed by major venture capital firms like Andreessen Horowitz and Radical Ventures, World Labs has raised about $100 million in recent funding rounds. These investors are betting big on Li’s vision, reflecting the surge in A.I. investments, which doubled to $24 billion this year.

🧠 Spatial Intelligence: Li's innovative concept of spatial intelligence aims to bridge the gap between perception and action. She illustrated this during a TED Talk by explaining how the brain predicts outcomes using spatial awareness, like a cat pushing over a glass. World Labs is set to develop A.I. that can understand and interact with the physical world in a similar manner.

🏫 Esteemed Background: Known for her pivotal contributions to A.I., Li co-directs the Human-Centered A.I. Institute at Stanford. Her previous roles include VP at Google Cloud and advisor to the White House on tech policies. Her extensive experience and network have positioned World Labs for rapid success.

Fei-Fei Li's World Labs is poised to revolutionize A.I. by creating systems that can act intelligently in the real world.  In her words, “If we want to advance A.I. beyond its current capabilities, we want more than A.I. that can see and talk. We want A.I. that can do.”
