In a significant step towards consumer hardware, OpenAI has acquired io, a device startup co-founded by famed Apple designer Jony Ive, in an all-equity deal valuing the startup at $6.5 billion. Ive’s renowned design firm, LoveFrom, will now spearhead creative and design work at OpenAI.
Here’s the lowdown:
🤝 Strategic Move into Consumer AI Hardware: With this acquisition, OpenAI positions itself squarely in competition with major tech companies like Apple, Google, and Meta, aiming to create a new generation of AI-powered consumer devices:
Jony Ive, who led the iconic design of Apple's iPhones, iPads, and Watches, will have an expansive role, influencing both physical devices and future ChatGPT experiences.
Io’s 55-member team—many former Apple designers and product specialists—will fully join OpenAI, bringing considerable hardware expertise.
📱 Moving Beyond Screens: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Jony Ive hinted at ambitions to transcend traditional screen-based devices, envisioning products that deeply integrate AI into daily life. The first devices from this collaboration are expected in 2026, with Altman emphasizing the need for seamless, intuitive interactions with AI technology.
Ive described the initial project as having “completely captured” his imagination, viewing it as a culmination of his 30 years in product design.
📊 Market Reaction and Competition
Apple’s stock price dipped 2% immediately following the announcement, signaling market recognition of potential competitive pressure from OpenAI’s hardware ambitions.
Unlike Apple, which has struggled with recent AI innovation, OpenAI’s collaboration with Ive positions it to combine best-in-class generative AI technology with premium consumer hardware.
OpenAI previously held a 23% stake in io, meaning this acquisition required a $5 billion additional investment—marking OpenAI’s largest-ever deal. This mirrors other industry moves into AI-focused devices, such as Meta's successful smart glasses and Google's recent partnership with Samsung and Warby Parker.
Yet OpenAI's product direction remains intentionally ambiguous, fueling intrigue about its final form factor.
