Let’s start with some backstory. In 2016, Google’s DeepMind AI lab made history when their program, dubbed AlphaGo, defeated one of the best players of the complex board game, Go. 7 years later, it’s 2023, and ChatGPT has taken over the AI sphere. However, DeepMind’s CEO, Demis Hassabis, claims that his team of engineers is working on a model that will end GPT-4’s dominance.

The best part? This model is being built on the techniques that made AlphaGo a success. Named Gemini, this large language model works with text and is designed to be similar in operation—but superior in capability—to OpenAI’s GPT-4. Though the model is still in development, Hassabis remains confident that features such as planning and problem-solving will eclipse GPT-4.

He says, “At a high level, you can think of Gemini as combining some of the strengths of AlphaGo-type systems with the amazing language capabilities of the large models.” But will this be enough to dethrone ChatGPT? We’ll just have to wait and see!

At this point, huge AI-centric investments shouldn’t come as a shock anymore. Over the last couple of months, major tech giants have embraced the integration of AI into either their operations, services, or product offerings. From Google and Microsoft to Asana, ClickUp, and Amazon, it’s been a crazy wave.

However, Amazon is taking this a step further with plans to invest $100 million in a generative AI center. This will achieve two major things. For one, it will help Amazon catch up with the likes of Microsoft and Google in the generative AI race. What’s more, it will enable the company to connect AI experts with clients looking to build AI-driven solutions for the market.

AWS CEO Adam Selipsky summed up the company’s plans at Bloomberg’s Tech Summit. In his words, “We will bring our internal AWS experts free-of-charge to a whole bunch of AWS customers, focusing on folks with significant AWS presence, and help them turbocharge their efforts to get real with generative AI, get beyond the talk…”

A person reading a newspaper

Remember when many people were of the popular opinion: there’s no way AI can take our jobs? Well…let’s just say the German tabloid Bild—which just so happens to be the most popular newspaper in Europe—doesn’t share this same sentiment.

Let’s look at the email Bild’s publisher, Axel Springer, sent to staff for more perspective. In this email, the company stated that it would “unfortunately be parting ways with colleagues who have tasks that in the digital world are performed by AI and/or automated processes.” These job losses are expected to be in the region of 200, in what appears to be a €100m cost-cutting program.

And although it appears that these cuts result from the company’s change in structure, as opposed to the existence of AI itself, the two aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive. What’s more, when you consider Mathias Döpfner’s (Axel Springer’s CEO) February statement that AI tools could “make independent journalism better than it ever was – or replace it”, even the most optimistic can read the writing on the wall.
