Figure has introduced its latest humanoid robot, the Figure 02, showcasing advanced AI-driven features for enhanced human-robot interaction.

Here’s what you need to know:

🚀 Figure 02 Unveiled: Figure has introduced its latest humanoid robot, the Figure 02, which builds on the foundation of its predecessor, Figure 01. This new model features a complete hardware and software overhaul, including six RGB cameras, an onboard visual language model, improved CPU/GPU capabilities, and enhanced human-like hands with 16 degrees of freedom.

🗣️ AI-Powered Communication: In partnership with OpenAI, Figure 02 integrates advanced natural language capabilities, allowing the robot to communicate effectively with human coworkers. This functionality facilitates task instructions and enhances safety by making the robot’s actions more transparent to those around it.

🏭 Industrial Focus: Designed for autonomous operation on factory floors, Figure 02 excels in tasks such as carting totes and other warehouse duties without the need for safety cages. The robot has already been put to the test at BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina facility, where it underwent training and data collection.

🔧 Human-Like Dexterity: Figure 02 continues the company’s commitment to using human-inspired hands, ensuring that the robot can perform complex tasks with precision and dexterity. This design choice reflects the ongoing debate in robotics about the balance between human-like flexibility and mechanical reliability.

While currently focused on industrial applications, Figure hints at broader future uses for Figure 02, potentially extending into commercial and domestic environments. The company envisions its robot as a versatile tool that combines the dexterity of human form with advanced AI to handle a wide range of tasks.

📸 OpenAI sets its sights on webcam startup, Opal.

OpenAI is expected to lead a $60 million Series B funding round for Opal Camera Inc., a startup known for developing high-end webcams. 

This round will likely include contributions from existing investors such as Founders Fund and Kindred Ventures. 

Here’s the lowdown: 

📷 Opal’s Flagship Product: Opal’s standout product is the Tadpole, a $149 webcam designed to clip onto laptop monitors. Despite its compact size—only 1.25 inches square and as light as an AA battery—Tadpole delivers ultra-sharp video quality with a resolution of up to 3840 x 2160 pixels, a feature typically found in much pricier webcams.

🛠️ Customization with Composer: Tadpole users can further enhance their video experience using Opal’s companion app, Composer. This app allows for the adjustment of lighting and other settings, ensuring optimal video quality under various conditions.

🚀 Shifting Focus to AI-Powered Devices: While Opal will continue its work on webcams post-investment, the company is expected to shift some resources toward developing AI-powered creative tools for consumers. These new devices might integrate OpenAI’s technology, potentially leveraging ChatGPT’s image and video generation models.

🤖 Opal’s AI Experience: Opal is no stranger to AI. Two years before Tadpole, the company launched the C1 webcam, which uses machine learning to enhance video quality and apply effects like background blurring. The C1 is powered by Intel’s Movidius Myriad X Vision chip, optimized for running AI models.

OpenAI’s interest in AI hardware isn’t limited to consumer devices. The company is reportedly in talks with Broadcom to develop a custom AI chip and has hired engineers who previously worked on Google’s TPU machine learning accelerators

⚡ New text-to-image model takes the stage!

An AI startup, Black Forest Labs, has burst onto the scene with FLUX 1, a suite of text-to-image models that already surpasses industry heavyweights like Midjourney 6.0, DALL-E 3 HD, and Stable Diffusion 3-Ultra.

Here’s the scoop: 

🌟 Unmatched Performance: FLUX 1 excels in image detail, scene complexity, and prompt adherence, earning top marks on the Elo rating system. It also offers a full range of aspect ratio and style options that users expect from top-tier image generators.

🧠 Expert Team: The startup boasts a team of engineers with roots in Stability AI, the creators of Stable Diffusion. The company has strong backing from AI industry leaders, including Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan, NVIDIA’s Timo Aila, and venture capital giant Andreessen Horowitz, which spearheaded a $31 million seed funding round.

💡 Innovative Technology: FLUX 1 sets itself apart by employing cutting-edge techniques like rotary positional embeddings for better sequence differentiation and a parallel diffusion transformer for faster image generation.

Black Forest Labs is gearing up to release a state-of-the-art text-to-video model. If FLUX 1 is any indication, video AI leaders like OpenAI, HeyGen, and Runway might need to step up their game.
