Hi šŸ˜…!

Itā€™s been a whirlwind of power plays, lawsuits, and product launches over the last week. Suffice it to say, weā€™re practically spoilt for choice for our weekly coverage of AI-centric happenings.

From Elon throwing his hat into the AI-powered ring to Anthropicā€™s latest launch and the latest OpenAI-centric lawsuit to boot, we have no idea where to even start from (jk.šŸ˜, weā€™re starting with Elon).

In any case, letā€™s get this show on the road!

In this issue, weā€™ve got:

Bionic hand and human hand touching.

With a slew of tech-focused companies (Twitter, SpaceX, Tesla, Neuralink, and The Boring Company) under his belt, one would ideally think that Elon would have had his fill by now. However, the popular tech mogulā€”in true Elon Musk fashionā€”has shocked the tech world once again.

Heā€™s throwing his hat in the ring again. This time, however, the ring is metaphorical šŸ˜. With his newly formed AI-focused company xAI, it appears that his goal is to ā€œunderstand the true nature of the universe.ā€ Since co-founding OpenAI in 2015, many have wondered when Elon will dip his toes into AIā€™s waters again. Well, what better time than nowšŸ’”?

In any case, the team is headed up by Elon himself, alongside other talented names in AI who have worked at companies like Microsoft Research, Google Research, OpenAI, and DeepMind. And although we donā€™t know much about their scope of operations, with Elonā€™s track record, itā€™s bound to be pretty interestingā€”to say the least.

At this point, it would appear that we canā€™t go a month without hearing about yet another ChatGPT rival. And although most competitors appear half-cooked and opportunistic, it seems like Anthropic really put a great deal of effort into this onešŸ¦¾!

Founded by former OpenAI senior staff, Anthropic brings a unique value propositionā€”with Claude 2ā€”that dwells on being an ethical large language model less susceptible to nefarious exploitation. And although itā€™s still in its early stages, Claude 2 has displayed some pretty impressive feats.

For one, it scored 76.5% on the MCQ section of the Bar and ranked in the 90th percentile of the reading and writing section of the GRE šŸ“š. Plus, it has demonstrated a 27% increase in coding proficiency over its previous modelā€”as measured by a Python test. For now, Claude 2 is only available to users in the US and UK, so you might need a VPN to test it if you reside elsewhere.

Once again, Sam Altmanā€™s OpenAI is facing scrutiny due to its controversial data-collection practices. However, this iteration of scrutiny is from two award-winning authors. Mona Awad and Paul Tremblay filed the lawsuit towards the end of June, claiming that the tech giantā€™s large language model ā€œingestedā€ their copyrighted intellectual property.

This comes from the basis that ChatGPT can effortlessly provide in-depth summaries of their published booksā€”cementing their thoughts that their books were used to train the model. Although one of the more popular ones, this suit joins the ever-growing list of cases between creatives and generative AI models.

And with the constantly-evolving nature of AI, itā€™s clear that this is just the beginning of this wave of litigation šŸŒŠāš–ļø.

One of the lesser-talked-about aspects of AI is the endless possibilities of re-imagination it provides. From a re-styling of your favorite artists to telling the stories of some of the most impactful animal-centric events in history, the possibilities are in your hands.

This week, join us as we explore the latter through the eyes of a skilled Reddit userā€”aided by Midjourney. Get in here!
