Rupert Murdoch's Dow Jones and the New York Post, both part of News Corp, have filed a lawsuit against Perplexity AI, accusing the startup of illegally using its copyrighted news content. 

The companies allege that Perplexity's AI "answer machine" scrapes their human-created articles to generate responses for users, thus diverting traffic away from their platforms and infringing on intellectual property rights.

Thomson stated, "Perplexity proudly states that users can ‘skip the links’ — apparently, Perplexity wants to skip the check." He emphasized that this practice harms journalists and content creators by diverting engagement from the original sources.

📰 The Broader Context: The lawsuit is part of a growing battle between news publishers and generative AI firms over content usage. As AI companies develop tools that rely on scraping publicly available articles, publishers argue this practice threatens their revenue and intellectual property. While some media outlets, like News Corp, have opted to license their content to companies such as OpenAI, others, like The New York Times, have pursued legal action to protect their rights.

⚖️ Legal Action Against Perplexity: News Corp’s lawsuit follows a cease-and-desist letter sent by The New York Times to Perplexity, demanding it stop using its journalism without authorization. News Corp’s complaint claims Perplexity's practices unjustly enrich the AI company by using the publishers' carefully researched content without permission.

🤝 A Contrast with OpenAI: Interestingly, News Corp has a different stance on OpenAI, having inked a $250 million content licensing deal earlier this year. Thomson referred to OpenAI as "principled," praising the company for acknowledging the need for integrity and creativity in the AI landscape.
