Anthropic has unveiled Claude Fable 5, a new model that sits above Opus in capability and marks the first public release of what the company calls a "Mythos-class" AI system.
The launch is one of the most significant AI releases of the year, not just because of the model's performance, but because it introduces a new approach to distributing frontier AI capabilities.
Rather than releasing everything to everyone, Anthropic is now splitting access between public and trusted users.
🚀 A new tier above Opus
For years, Anthropic's model lineup followed a simple progression: Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus.
Fable changes that. According to Anthropic, Mythos-class models represent a new capability tier beyond Opus.
The first Mythos model appeared privately through Project Glasswing in April. Fable 5 is the first time capabilities at that level are reaching general users.
What's interesting is that Fable 5 and Mythos 5 are essentially the same underlying model.
The difference isn't intelligence. It's access. Public users get Fable 5 with safeguards enabled. Cybersecurity organizations and selected researchers get Mythos 5 with some of those restrictions removed.
⚡ Performance is shifting from minutes to days
Anthropic's examples focus less on benchmark scores and more on long-duration work.
The company says Fable 5 can remain effective across millions of tokens, complete complex engineering projects, and carry out research workflows that previously required extensive human oversight.
Some of the examples Anthropic highlighted include:
Stripe reportedly used the model to complete a codebase-wide migration in a day that would normally take months
Fable 5 completed Pokémon FireRed using vision alone
Mythos 5 accelerated parts of Anthropic's internal drug-discovery workflow by roughly 10x
The model conducted genomics research over the course of more than a week with limited human intervention
The pattern is becoming increasingly clear: frontier labs are optimizing for autonomous work rather than isolated prompts.
🛡️ Why Anthropic is adding stricter safeguards
The most important part of the announcement may actually be the safety section.
Anthropic says Mythos-class systems have crossed a capability threshold where cybersecurity, biology, chemistry, and model distillation present meaningful risks if left unrestricted.
Instead of refusing requests outright, Fable 5 uses a system of classifiers that determine when requests should be routed to Claude Opus 4.8 instead.
Anthropic says fewer than 5% of sessions trigger these fallbacks, though the company admits false positives will happen while the safeguards mature.
The company is also introducing mandatory 30-day retention for Mythos-class traffic to help identify jailbreaks, coordinated attacks, and emerging misuse patterns.
🔐 The rise of "trusted access"
The launch feels like the beginning of a broader industry shift. For the last few years, the playbook was simple: build a stronger model and release it.
Fable 5 introduces something different. Everyone gets access to Frontier AI. But the most sensitive capabilities are increasingly reserved for vetted organizations operating within controlled programs.
Today, that's Project Glasswing for cybersecurity and Anthropic's upcoming trusted-access program for life sciences researchers. Tomorrow, it could become the standard way frontier models are distributed.

Most AI companies are trying to automate knowledge work. Prometheus wants to automate the creation of the physical world.
The startup, co-founded by Jeff Bezos and former Verily co-founder Vik Bajaj, has raised $12 billion at a $41 billion valuation to build what it calls an "artificial general engineer" — an AI system capable of designing complex physical systems ranging from jet engines to pharmaceutical compounds.
The round follows an earlier $6.2 billion raise less than a year ago and instantly makes Prometheus one of the most valuable AI startups in existence.
💰 Why investors are piling in
The funding round attracted some of the largest names in finance, including JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, and Bezos himself.
The excitement reflects a growing belief that the next frontier of AI may not be chatbots, copilots, or content generation. Instead, it may be engineering.
If language models automated parts of software creation, Prometheus is attempting something far more ambitious: automating the design process behind physical products, manufacturing systems, materials, and scientific discovery.
That is a much larger market — and arguably a much harder problem.
⚙️ The vision: an artificial general engineer
Prometheus isn't positioning itself as another AI assistant for engineers. Its goal is to become an engineering system that can independently design, test, optimize, and iterate on complex real-world systems.
Think of it as moving from AI helping engineers work faster to AI becoming the engineer
Software can often be tested instantly. Physical systems can't. They must obey the laws of physics, manufacturing constraints, supply chains, safety requirements, and economic realities.
Building AI that can reliably navigate all those constraints would represent a major leap beyond today's AI systems.
📉 Bezos disagrees with the AI doom narrative
One of the most interesting parts of the announcement wasn't the technology. It was Bezos's view of what happens to jobs.
While many AI leaders warn about large-scale unemployment, Bezos argues that productivity gains will create the opposite problem: labor scarcity.
His argument is that as AI dramatically increases productivity, standards of living rise, creating more demand throughout the economy. In that world, people may choose to work less, households may need fewer earners, and companies may still struggle to find enough workers.
It's a notably different vision from the widespread job displacement scenarios often discussed across the industry.

SpaceX has officially priced its IPO at $135 per share, raising $75 billion and becoming the largest public offering ever completed.
The listing marks a historic moment not just for SpaceX, but for the broader AI and technology market, where investor appetite for frontier infrastructure companies appears stronger than ever.
📈 Demand for the offering is enormous
Most IPOs discover their pricing through the traditional roadshow process. SpaceX took a different route.
The company began testing its $135 target price with investors before formally launching the offering. According to reports, demand ultimately exceeded available shares by roughly four times, giving SpaceX confidence to proceed at one of the most ambitious valuations ever attempted.
Investors are already betting that the stock could open significantly higher once trading begins.
💰 Elon Musk and early investors are the biggest winners
The offering instantly creates one of the largest wealth events in modern technology history.
Elon Musk remains by far the largest beneficiary through his combination of Class A and Class B shares, with the IPO putting him on track to become the world's first trillionaire on paper.
Several longtime SpaceX backers are also seeing extraordinary returns, including:
Antonio Gracias, whose stake is worth nearly $68 billion at the IPO price
Luke Nosek, one of SpaceX's earliest investors and board members
Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX's longtime COO and one of the company's most influential operators
The gains extend beyond major insiders. Hundreds of venture investors, employees, and smaller investors who participated through special purpose vehicles are also expected to benefit from the public listing.
